“Interstellar Terror,” Universal Studios Florida, 2008.

On this date in 1997, science-fiction/horror film “Event Horizon” was released in theaters.  In the film, a spaceship receives a distress call from “Event Horizon,” a technologically-advanced ship that disappeared under mysterious circumstances on its maiden voyage.  After dispatching a rescue mission to the newly-reappeared ghost ship, the crew discover that the “Event Horizon” has returned with a horrifying secret.

Halloween Horror Nights 18’s “Interstellar Terror” house was heavily influenced by “Event Horizon.”  The house was described in publicity materials as follows:

“Prided among the scientific community as the greatest achievement in the history of mankind, the NSO COLUMBUS 1492 is the first manned spacecraft to leave the relative safety of our solar system. When the ship disappears for several years, and then reappears just outside the orbit of our moon, your rescue team is sent to investigate. They find that an artifact the crew brought on board causes destruction and forces you to witness INTERSTELLAR TERROR.”
