30 Days of Halloween Horror Nights: What House Ended Up Disappointing You the Most?
No offense to the cast of this house, but I was greatly disappointed in Halloween Horror Nights 18’s “Reflections of Fear.”
The Bloody Mary character had an incredible buildup: a detailed website that slowly revealed her tragic, vengeful past, appearances in a series of genuinely scary commercials, and her moody dialogue in the event’s front-entrance plaza mirror screen.
By the time I actually got to the entrance of “Reflections of Fear,” my anticipation was palpable: this was THE house to see and experience Bloody Mary in all of her terrifying glory. What would it be like to feel Mary’s insanity and rage? How would they create Mary’s burst-through-the-mirror effect? What does Bloody Mary’s mirror-world look like?
And then I experienced the house . . . and a series of letdowns. “Reflections of Fear” lacked any of the actual “spirit” (no pun intended) that made Bloody Mary so, well, scary. There was no rage! There was no insanity! There weren’t even that many “Mary” scareactors!
In truth, “Reflections of Fear” was a victim of my own over-hyped imagination. It could never have possibly lived up to my level of anticipation. It didn’t feature any of the little Bloody Mary vignettes that I’d created in my head, and for that, it was disappointing to me. I’d love to go back and experience the house again, just to give it one more (fair) shot. Until that day, though, HHN 18’s “Reflections of Fear” is my number one “House I Thought I’d Enjoy, but Didn’t.”
